Overview
The Chronomètre à Résonance is F.P. Journe's most intellectually celebrated creation, applying the centuries-old acoustic principle of resonance to regulate two independent balance wheels into sympathetic synchrony. Housed in the Souveraine collection, it presents twin silvered dials that make the dual-time complication immediately legible. The movement is crafted in 18k rose gold, a Journe hallmark introduced to reduce magnetism and improve long-term stability.
History
F.P. Journe debuted the Résonance in 2000, reviving a horological concept explored by Antide Janvier and Abraham-Louis Breguet in the eighteenth century but never before industrialised in a wristwatch. Early references were cased in platinum at 38 mm before the line matured to a 40 mm format, with rose gold cases offered alongside. Production continued for nearly two decades, cementing the reference as one of the most technically singular watches of the modern era. Collectors regard surviving examples — particularly early brass-movement pieces — as important milestones in independent watchmaking.
Notable points
- Calibre 1499.3 is constructed entirely in 18k rose gold, a material Journe adopted to minimise magnetic interference and enhance movement longevity.
- Two independent balance wheels are coupled by the resonance phenomenon: when brought into proximity, they naturally lock into anti-phase oscillation, each stabilising the other.
- Twin silvered dials display two independent time zones, making the mechanical duality of the movement directly visible on the dial.
- Available in both platinum and rose gold cases at 40 mm, the watch sits firmly in the dress-watch category despite its mechanical complexity.
- Production spanned approximately 2000 to 2019, and the reference is now discontinued, heightening its standing among collectors of independent horology.
