The ref. 1601 succeeded earlier Datejust references as Rolex refined both its case architecture and movement technology in the late 1950s. It was powered by the calibre 1570 and its date-corrector variant, the calibre 1575 — both belonging to Rolex's celebrated 1500-series, widely regarded as among the most reliable automatic movements of their era. Over its production life the reference passed through several distinct dial generations, from warm gilt and silver executions to the sigma-marked dials that signalled the use of gold or platinum in the printing. It was eventually succeeded by the ref. 16000 series as Rolex transitioned to sapphire crystal in the late 1970s.
