The Rolex Explorer reference 214270 represents the second generation of the modern 39 mm Explorer, introduced in 2010 as a measured enlargement of its predecessor. Housed in Rolex's proprietary Oystersteel, it pairs a clean black dial with the model line's signature 3-6-9 Arabic numeral layout for maximum legibility under demanding conditions. Powered by the in-house Calibre 3132, the 214270 remained in production for roughly a decade before being succeeded by a revised Explorer in 2021.

The Explorer lineage traces its roots to the early 1950s, when Rolex developed a robust tool watch capable of accompanying mountaineers and expedition members into extreme environments. The 214270 continued that tradition by stepping the case diameter from 36 mm to 39 mm, aligning the Explorer with contemporary wrist-size preferences while preserving the model's austere, uncluttered aesthetic. An early production variant featured longer "Mercedes" hour-hand proportions that were later revised, giving the reference a minor but well-documented internal variation of interest to collectors. The reference was discontinued in 2021 upon the introduction of the 124270, which returned the Explorer to a 36 mm case.
