Overview
The Tudor Black Bay P01 (ref. 70150) is a 42 mm stainless steel diver built around the aesthetic of a late-1960s prototype that remained locked in Tudor's archives for decades. Its distinctively angular case, hinged crown-protection system, and folding-clasp strap set it apart from every other reference in the Black Bay family. Powering the watch is Tudor's in-house Cal. MT5612, a COSC-certified movement with a 70-hour power reserve.
History
The P01's origins trace to a Tudor diving-watch prototype developed in the late 1960s, reportedly in collaboration with the United States Navy, that was never brought to market. Tudor revisited the archival design and introduced the production version in 2019, faithfully translating the prototype's unusual case architecture — including its patented pivoting crown-guard — into a wearable, modern reference. The model ran through 2024, occupying a singular niche within the broader Black Bay collection as its most historically specific and mechanically distinctive member.
Notable points
- The pivoting crown-guard is a direct functional reproduction of the mechanism seen on the original late-1960s prototype, secured by a locking lever on the case flank.
- Cal. MT5612 is a manufacture Tudor movement bearing COSC chronometer certification and offering a 70-hour power reserve.
- The 42 mm case dimensions place the P01 at the larger end of the Black Bay range, yet the angular lug design gives it a wrist presence distinct from the more rounded Black Bay 41.
- A hybrid fabric-and-rubber strap with a folding clasp was developed specifically for the P01, echoing the utilitarian ethos of the original prototype.
- The black dial and gilt-edged snowflake hands reference Tudor's classic tool-watch heritage while remaining legible under the angular case architecture.
