Overview
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 44 Carbon (ref. 26400AU) pairs a 44 mm forged carbon case with a black ceramic bezel, pushing the Offshore's signature oversized aesthetic into the realm of high-performance materials. The black Méga Tapisserie dial carries the line's iconic textured pattern while housing a full chronograph layout. Calibre 3126/3840 provides the movement architecture, combining an automatic base with an integrated chronograph module.
History
The Royal Oak Offshore line was conceived in the early 1990s as a deliberately larger, more assertive counterpart to the original Royal Oak, and it quickly became a canvas for material experimentation. Reference 26400AU entered the collection around 2015, representing the Offshore's embrace of forged carbon — a composite material prized for its rigidity, low weight, and distinctive mottled surface pattern. The reference remained in production until approximately 2021, during which time it occupied a prominent position in the Offshore catalogue as one of the most technically material-forward executions of the 44 mm chronograph. Its combination of forged carbon and black ceramic became a benchmark for how the line could translate motorsport-inspired materials into haute horlogerie.
Notable points
- Forged carbon case: the material is produced by compressing carbon fibres under heat and pressure, yielding a unique, non-repeating surface pattern on every case.
- Black ceramic bezel: ceramic offers exceptional scratch resistance and a deep, consistent colour that complements the carbon's organic texture.
- Méga Tapisserie dial: an enlarged version of the Grande Tapisserie check pattern, machined directly into the dial surface and a hallmark of the Royal Oak Offshore identity.
- Calibre 3126/3840: an in-house movement combining an automatic oscillating weight with a column-wheel chronograph module, visible through the sapphire caseback.
- 44 mm diameter: at the larger end of the Offshore chronograph range, the case size reinforces the model's bold, sport-luxury character.
